ELOshield - Proximity Detection System

Posted by ELOKON GmbH (booth # B1762)

Summary of Innovation

ELOshield is an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) that enhances operator awareness of pedestrians and objects near material handling equipment (MHE) to improve safety for both vehicles and workers. ELOshield‘s Ultra Wideband (UWB)-based warning system helps prevent both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian accidents. A fixed-site version monitors accident-prone areas, such as high-traffic aisle intersections. A mobile version monitors zones of up to 50 feet around moving MHE.
Based on a customer’s needs, these zones can be flexibly programmed (by vehicle) as circles, symmetrical rectangles, or asymmetrical polygons. Two zones, representing “warning” and “danger ” risks, can trigger different system reactions. When trucks get too close to each other or to pedestrians, a truck-mounted display sends an audible and/or visual alert and automatically slows the truck down to “creep speed.” If pedestrians come too close to a truck, their tags vibrate and sound an alarm.

Innovation Statement

No other comparable system provides (1) customizable object-detection zones around trucks (to maximize accuracy and minimizes false alarms), (2) truck-specific geo-zoning and speed control (to enable different vehicles to drive faster or slower than others within defined areas), (3) longer range detection (up to 50 feet around vehicle), and (4) longer lasting pedestrian tag batteries (up to a full shift). In addition to collision avoidance, the system also provides operator access control on each vehicle and automatic speed control at exterior doorways (so vehicles can operate at maximum speed outdoors but are limited to a safe speed indoors).

Safety is a major concern of enterprises with heavy material handling operations (OSHA reports some 20,000 serious injuries and almost 100 deaths each year due to forklift accidents); this solution significantly reduces the risk of accidents and all of the human and financial costs associated with them—from productivity interruptions, to skilled laborers missing work, to insurance, legal and damage costs.
