Reading, PA: Full-service metal fabrication shop Southern Metalcraft, Inc., Lithonia, Ga., has eliminated rework required due to product damaged in transit by replacing manual stretch-wrapping in its packaging and shipping process with a fully automated TAB Wrapper Tornado orbital wrapping machine. Developed and manufactured by TAB Industries, Reading, Pa., the TAB Wrapper Tornado secures the pallet load to its pallet by wrapping plastic film 360 degrees around and under the pallet to create a sturdy, unitized pallet load that keeps the product in place despite the rigors of transportation throughout the supply chain. The fab shop was shipping upwards of 25 pallets of large, complex parts per week and reworking an average of one pallet per month at a cost of thousands of dollars over the year, according to Greg Williams, president. “With the manual wrapping, we just couldn't get a secure wrap every time,” says Williams, noting steel banding and crates were often used for extra support. “As we grew, it became more important to address this and then I read about the TAB Wrapper.”
The TAB Wrapper enables a single forklift driver to operate the machine at the press of a button without leaving the seat while the load stays raised on the forks, turning a cumbersome, two-person job into a fast, easy one-person job. “Our drivers are very happy with it – we should've bought this a long time ago,” says Williams, who purchased the 100-inch model TAB Wrapper, the largest of the standard models available. “We researched other wrappers but the TAB Wrapper was the best choice for us and the 100-inch offers the most bang for the buck,” says Williams. Enjoying a sharp increase in business, the company has been able to handle packing and shipping nearly twice as many pallets per week since installing the TAB Wrapper and has dramatically reduced the use of crating and banding.” Of the 40 pallets wrapped last week, all were wrapped on the TAB Wrapper.
